Hi all
Just thought I'd start a new thread for the upcoming Waratah Finals Weekend as there is some big news I would like to share that covers all competitions.
All games on Newcastle Basketball Stadium Main Court will be again web cast live throughout the weekend!!
That includes:
SATURDAY 27 AUGUST 2011
9.00 State Men Div 1 SF
12.00 Waratah Women SF
2.00 Waratah Women SF
5.00 Waratah Men SF
7.00 Waratah Men SF (*) - Newcastle v (Manly or Sutherland)
SUNDAY 28 AUGUST 2011
9.00 Youth Men Div 1 GF
11.00 State Women Div 1 GF
1.00 State Men Div 1 GF
3.00 Waratah Women GF (*)
5.00 Waratah Men GF (*)
(*) Indicates full commentary with webcast.
The big difference this year is our media partner NBN Television who are web casting will also replay a full extended highlights package of the Waratah Finals Weekend on FREE TO AIR television in the week or 2 after the finals.
So for people from the Central Coast right up to the Gold Coast will be able to witness action from the finals.
For those in Sydney or from southern NSW, get onto WIN TV or NINE and see if they will program the replay!! They don't have to do anything, just replay it.
More details will be released next week, but make sure you check out www.newcastlebasketball.com.au for the latest info and of course the link to watch the web cast.
Please feel free to to let everyone in association land know as we want to make sure everyone gets to follow the action!

Good-bye to the Sharks and Bears but thanks for the great effort.
it is a good effort by the Illawarra side in this year's men's competition. the team was put together just six weeks before the start of the season. And they have done well with a bunch of talented young guys and a few veterans. It took them a while to find their feet but Jackson and demos provided a solid backbone and it was good to see these two gain some consistency, something they don't get a chance to show in the NBL.

Speaking of which, will Jackson & Demos be available for the final on Sunday 28th should Illawarra get through or will they be needed for the Hawks vs Kings NBL pre-season game in Wollongong? The same question applies to Manly's Luke Cooper.
With just a little bit of thought & planning, the pre-season game could well have been played at Newcastle after the conslusion of the finals... what a drawcard that would have been & what a great way to build bridges between the different levels of the game in NSW.

Hey Daevo, I totally agree. That's why we at Newcastle offered it to both clubs last year as a Saturday night main court spectacular.
Both declinde for various reasons.
Subsequently, we didn't go there this year. We preferred to focus on making it another cracking weekend for the Waratah League.

Add this to the list of reasons the NBL is failing..way to connect with the actual basketball community....complete joke.

That is disgraceful if those players aren't available for the finals.
Great idea Daevo.
Unfortunately, thought, planning and NSW Basketball is basically an oxymoron these days.

Yeah, gutted. It was a top effort for us to make the playoffs but once we got there we wanted to go further. Couple of 50/50's went against us (along with one absolutely dreadful unsportsmanlike call in the 4th) but I'm not going to be the whinging coach who blames someone else. Bottom line is we needed to shoot better and it was our downfall in plenty of games this season. All credit to Manly, they made some good adjustments at half time to the things we did to limit Arkell and Cooper and they deserved the win.

If Hawks win their semi on Saturday night, Jackson, Demos & Delaney will be remaining in Newcastle for the final.

Thats good illawarra will be at full strength. Does anyone know if Cooper will be there? And out of interest is White even with the kings anymore?
Manly will have a tough time against Newie who should be favourites. If somehow manly do get up, they will struggle backing up as Jim Arkell has apparently forgotten you can call subs.
Anyway it will be a great finals. Going by the last few years I suspect it will end in tears for Warren Rosen and the comets Saturday night. And Newie will be too tough for anyone should they get to Sunday.

don't think full strength is quite right. in terms of key players that is the case but college players Sean Mullan and Dominique Cooks have returned to the US.
Cooks was a starter and Mullan was second or third off the bench.
so depth will be a problem for the Hawks, particularly if they were to play both games on the weekend.

That is a blow. Cooks has been very good this season and played some outstanding D against us, as well as knocking down shots. Sean played his role well and usually gave some points off the bench. Both will be missed.

So Seck is definitely out? That's no good. I know some had hopes he would make a recovery.
Big blow in the pg match up. Zach is going to go for like 8 points now that Seck won't be there to hold him to 4.

which will take one of their defensive specialists off Jackson or demos...

Hi all
Team Information Packs are now out so if you want to check out some of what is happening over the Finals weekend it's worth a quick read. CLICK HERE (http://control.visionscape.com.au/SiteFiles/newcastlebasketballcomau/2011_WFW_Team_Information_Pack.pdf)
In short for those interested in purchasing a cool bevvie whilst here, yes we will have 2 bars in full swing with tap beer and plenty of other stock, so plenty of opportunity to celebrate or commiserate with others. Plenty of food outlets too including Eagle Boys pizza and other stuff.
Just finalising the landing page for the streaming so for those not coming, you can watch the games starting with the 9am Hornsby v Lithgow game Saturday morning!
If any one has any questions re the weekend, fire away and I'll do my best to get back to you guys asap.

Web stream is working fine but BNSW has borked the LiveStats links (how surprising) since nothing other than Hornsby-Lithgow is working. There is an "also live" link in the H-L game that shows a score for Penrith-Bbankstown but when you click that link it takes you to a Hills-Illawarra YLW game so who knows what game the score update is really for.
Oh well, I guess this weekend is a showcase of what basketball is like in NSW

At last LiveStats are working for Penrith-Bankstown with Penrith currently up 54-44 late in the 3rd

Sec is playing? That's a quick recovery.
Also, thespy well done with the ustream. Great effort in getting this organised.
sydney didn't have enough scoring punch to stop that illawarra side. Borgia was the only real threat. As for the hawks Pilon was amazing. he really turned back the clock with 30 points and 15 boards.
now for the other semi. don't really see manly getting up over newcastle but if they do they will be playing the grand final without cooper who doesn;t have a clearance from the kings to play - as demos, jackson and delaney do for the hawks

Live streaming has been great. (LiveStats is another story.)
Good work on the coverage & good luck to your men's team in the final. It would be great to see them get the win in front of their home crowd but win or lose, it should be a good game.

Does anyone know if games already played are being hosted anywhere?
TheSpy
28-08-2011, 01:10 PM
Hi Keyser
Yeah, they are hosted on Ustream, I'm just awaiting the link, but if you click on the logo on the screen it will take you there, but only last nights men's Champs semi's are there. More will follow I've been informed.
Re Livestats. yep..... don't blame Newcastle......
