View Full Version : Tigs v 36ers @ the Cage 27/1

Every game needs to be a win for the Tigs & it's @ home to the 36ers.
Both sides have plenty to play for, & the Julius factor could go either way.
Will Wortho kill it again for 36er fans?
Will Jules let his game do the talking?
Can the 36ers find a way to win?
To be answered tomorrow night, but where will it be won or lost?
I'm asking 'cos I don't have a clue. ;)

I think this is going to be a close game, tempers will flare and it would be nice to see the Sixers get some revenge for what took place in Adelaide earlier in the season.
Ballinger could be the key issue for Adelaide, anyone know how healthy he is?
Melbourne just came out of Perth with a heavy loss so we will see how strong the will power is for them tonight.
I would like to say Adelaide by 5 as Tigers loss on Saturday to Perth might have knocked their confidence a bit *however* if Anstey catches fire from outside with the worlds slowest release, then the Tigers will win by 4.

I thought they were supposed to do that a week and a half ago.

Obviously you haven't seen Marcus Camby shoot.

I'd be very surprised to see another close one.
The trends and the signs strongly suggest a comfortable Tigers win tonight. Double digit victory without any doubt at all.
Those trends and signs are: Coming off massive loss, must MUST MUST win game, restoration of pride from the veterans, general upward trend since Anstey, recent clobbings of Hawks and Perth at The Cage.
Yep it doesn't even matter who the other team is.

From media reports Adam Ballinger has made the trip & assumed to play.
Time will tell.
To me, this game is right up there with trying to predict the weather & wide open to speculation.
May the best team win.

agree, while the ladder might suggest the Sixers are still a chance to make the 8 or the 4 or whatever it is this season, I can't help but feel that the players themselves don't really believe its possible. Just feels like their "must win" mentality is starting to run a little low on steam.
If the Tigers get an early jump I can't see the Sixers having the motivation to hang tough tonight.

Well, there are of course plenty of factors relating to the other team which suggest the same conclusion at which I arose: Seriously minimal dwindling playoff hopes compared to the Tigers still having a reasonable shot at it, Ballinger's recent ill health, Adelaide's horrendous record against the Tigers this season etc etc. But, funnily enough your sarcastic point has a truthful element to it. The Tigers are a far superior team, so if they're at the top of their game tonight (as my factors suggest) then it doesn't matter what the 36ers do because they'll get beaten regardless.

You'd expect the Tigers to be easily too good tonight. But the 36ers are still going to show up and still have some chance. Their hopes mostly depend on Gilchrist as he's shown the ability in some games to be completely unstoppable. They've got plenty of players who are capable of breakout performances (Groves, Burston, Holmes, even Ng or Hill), and they're going to need them tonight if Ballinger is still hampered much by his back injury.

36ers by one at the half. They are playing fairly well and Balls is on fire. Huge block on show off that was called a foul.
Tigers look confused and are going back to their boring to watch games. To many bombs from the.......Center which he has only hit one out of about five or something like that.
Still confident that the Tigers will get a double degit win LV?

Anyone else notice that Burston's block (the block, not when the ball went out) was with 8 seconds left on the clock...
Then for the inbounds they put 9 on the clock (when it should have been closer to 7), then with the ball knocked out of bounds again with two seconds left... and Hodge of course scores after that second inbounds.
An extra two seconds which the Tigers never should have had...
Edit: Which was around about where the collapse happened as well... ugh.

Nice to see the Tigers got some help to do what they can't do on their own! :(
Adelaide deserved to get that game but now with Gilchrist gone it makes it even worse.
I must admit though, Mike Rose......WOW. 5/5 from the three point line tonight. I also notice that the tigers run better with Anstey on the bench and Johnson at the 5. Tell you something Leftover?

I forgot to add the smiley face at the end. You know, that thing called a joke. I was playing around after watching a poor display of refing in tonights game thats all.
I didn't think it was worth a threat of banning though was it?
Alex,
Gilchrist got his injury when he slid on the court and what looked like jaring his knee and fell like a sack of potatoes of which the ref next to him ignored and stepped over him instead of helping him.
I don't think anyone knows happened to Anstey, he didn't come back after half time and when he did, his warm up shirt was on.
Where was Ray Hunt tonight?
they didn't need him

"But the win came at a cost for Melbourne as well with centre Chris Anstey taking no part in the second half after suffering a back injury."

I was playing around after watching a poor display of refing in tonights game thats all.
With a few minutes of play left in the second quarter Ballinger scored and was sent to the line for a bonus shot, a timeout was called, and he subsequently stepped up for two free throws. NBL - Where Sleepwalking Happens.

The foul by Anstey on Ballinger was assessed to be after the shot and so the two shots were because the Tigers were over the team foul limit.

Sounds like a good win, pity I wasn't there. http://www.bombertalk4.com/images/smilies/eusa_doh.gif
Great to see Rose have a very good game. Like I said in another thread, give him time to learn the system and get to know his teammates and he'll do better and someone who shot 48% 3s in College (yes, even Division 2) will always be a good shooter.
Less (shooting) is more for Hodge - 60% FG and 11 assists! Not to mention 8 boards. Great game. http://www.bombertalk4.com/images/smilies/eusa_clap.gif
Great to have Johnson again step up with Anstey out. And stop shooting 3s Chris. Yeah, right. http://www.bombertalk4.com/images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif

This was obviously Seamus' fault.
I'll let you in on a secret - he has a little clock operating board in his box that overrides the main buttons. When the refs missed the shot clock not resetting twice against Cairns, he didn't do anything so no one would suspect him come the business end of the season and he could help the team out.

Great game Wednesday night. It was playoff standard basketball. The 36ers were firing for the first three quarters, led by Ballinger and Herbert's sweet shooting. The Tigers offense was firing too, with the exception of a few dumb turnovers by Julius Hodge. There aren't too many critiques I'd give our offense after that game, except perhaps Wortho was a tad too keen to turn it into a one man show at times. At the other end, the 36ers were moving well, creating space for themselves and hitting the shots they were creating. It was dissapointing seeing their court marshall (Gilchrist) go down like that as the game was beginning to look like another classic ala last time.
Really though, there's only two words that need to be said: Mike Rose!
And, another few words for the noisy critics of Al Westover's subbing: I hope you were watching.
He made two subbing moves which were crucial to the Tigers getting the W. Firstly, he saw Rose's shooting touch and left him on the court. Rose hadn't played more than 7 or 8 minutes in any one game in a Tigers uniform, but Al noted he was hot and left him on at the expense of the experience of veteran Corletto, who'd been in good form himself over the past few games. Rose ended up going 6/7 including a late steal and fast break three point play and then a big three with a minute and a half left. The other move was leaving Johnson off late and making the Tigers play small ball. Johnson had been scoring well but defensively was exposed as Burston got an embarrassingly open dunk in the third. The small ball Tigers line up increased the defensive intensity and was the most successful line up of the night for the Tigers.

1. No, I wasn't. http://www.bombertalk4.com/images/smilies/eusa_doh.gif 2. About effing time.
BUT: The Rose one was a no-brainer and Corletto doesn't finish games much anyway, apart from recently when he's been the only other guard. When Crosswell was still playing, he would finish, even thought that left us with two PGs on at the end who can't shoot.
And for the whole season (apart from when Anstey got back) I have been very critical of Al finishing with Johnson on the bench. Sure, his D isn't great, but at least having a genuine big out there is going to discourage opposing players from driving the lane. In the close finish loss against Cairns, Williams (who I thought had been pretty poor all night) got an open layup in the half court offence late in the game when DJ was off. And while Johnson is nowhere near the rebounder that Anstey is, having a proper big out there should help in that area. Plus he has to learn sometime, best to start now. Experience now will be invaluable in the future.
